A new Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health case study, Navigating Change: Sustaining the Anchor Mission Amidst Leadership Transition at UMass Memorial Health, details HAN member UMass Memorial Health’s accomplishments over the first five years of anchor mission implementation.
The groundbreaking initiative focused on leveraging UMMH’s economic power to improve community health and well-being through local sourcing, local hiring, and investing in place. The case study also examines how UMMH should ensure the future success of the anchor mission in conjunction with ongoing efforts regarding health and healthcare equity, DEIB, and community benefits.
From the UMMH case study:
There can be confusion about what an Anchor Mission truly is. It is not really a program or an initiative. Rather, it is a philosophy, an ethos, a way of life, an intentional decision/belief that we should use resources not just for healthcare but for equity outside our own four walls. It involves a willingness to serve any and all needs.
– Doug Brown, former President of Community Hospitals and Chief Administrative Officer at UMMH
