Healthcare anchors have a unique role to play as investors in their communities to improve community health and well-being, particularly for those impacted by a legacy of divestment and discrimination. Many HAN member health systems have committed to redirecting a portion of their investable assets toward impact investments that are place-based and address community conditions that create racial, economic, and environmental disparities. By providing critical capital, health systems have helped build thousands of affordable homes, enabled small businesses to tap into financial resources, and helped lower-wage workers save millions of dollars in fees and interest.
Health systems are often only one of a few institutions in their communities that can leverage their long-term reserves to strategically fill market gaps in lending and investment. By allocating a small portion of their investment portfolios to projects and aligning them with other discretionary funds, they can combine stable returns with social impact and create more sustainable solutions.
