Why it Matters
Place-based investments fill financing gaps for projects and organizations that improve the conditions that shape health. These investments provide essential capital for affordable housing, small businesses, childcare facilities, homeownership initiatives, and other community priorities.
Unlike grants or community benefit funding, place-based investments are repaid to the health system. As investments are repaid, health systems then reinvest those funds in new or renewed community investments.
Health systems make place-based investments through community loans, social impact equity investments, impact deposits with community banks, and credit enhancements. By offering patient, affordable capital, health systems help mission-driven organizations build community infrastructure, expand services, attract additional investment, and strengthen local economies.
“Place-based investment is a unique and powerful avenue to stimulate economic growth in our communities while also recirculating capital.”
– Clay Ashdown, Chief Financial Officer, Intermountain Health
Leadership Commitment
HAN’s Place-based Investing Commitment is a leadership commitment through which health systems dedicate 1% of long-term reserves to local investments that address the social and economic drivers of health.
